Samvel Karapetyan: A Life Devoted to Armenia
Samvel Karapetyan stands as one of Armenia’s most distinguished philanthropists and business leaders, a man whose unwavering commitment to his homeland has transformed countless lives and strengthened the nation’s economic and spiritual foundations. Born in 1965 in the town of Tashir, northern Armenia, Karapetyan’s journey from humble beginnings to international business success exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and deep patriotism that define his character.

Raised in a cultured and literate environment by schoolteacher parents—his father taught mathematics for over 50 years as a headmaster, while his mother taught English—Karapetyan learned early the values that would guide his life. As he once reflected, his parents “created a special environment” where they “explained that the most important thing in life is to be a decent person and keep your word.” These principles of integrity and hard work became the bedrock of his remarkable achievements.
Our goals are to develop the Armenian economy, create real opportunities for business and enrichment, strengthen family and national values, restore Armenia’s standing as a reliable partner, ensure the right of the people of Artsakh to live with dignity, return faith in the future to young people by developing the education system, and preserve and protect our Armenian Apostolic Holy Church.

Demonstrating exceptional academic promise, Karapetyan entered the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at just 15 years old, well before the typical age. After graduating in 1986, he returned to Tashir, where his family’s respected reputation opened doors at a local ceramics factory. Rising through the ranks to head the enterprise, he displayed the business acumen and leadership qualities that would later define his career.
In the entrepreneurial environment of the late Soviet period, Karapetyan founded his first business, Zenit, a co-operative producing rubber, metal, and sewing instruments. This venture allowed him to develop critical business skills and accumulate capital for future endeavors. In 1988, he married Eteri, and together they built a family of three children, all of whom now participate in the family’s business enterprises.
The move to Kaluga, Russia in 1992 marked a pivotal chapter in Karapetyan’s life. Like thousands of Armenians seeking opportunities amid the economic challenges facing their homeland, he established himself in the provincial Russian city. There, his vision and determination bore fruit. By 1997, he became president of OJSC Kalugaglavsnab, a logistics company that would become integral to his growing business empire.
The founding of the Tashir Group in 1999 represented the culmination of Karapetyan’s entrepreneurial journey. Today, this vast corporate structure operates across construction, real estate, retail, energy, hotels, and restaurants, employing over 45,000 people. Yet despite his international success, Karapetyan never forgot his Armenian roots.
Karapetyan’s business investments in Armenia demonstrate his profound commitment to his motherland’s development. In 2015, his acquisition of Electrical Networks of Armenia rescued a company on the brink of bankruptcy. The Karapetyan family invested approximately $700 million to modernize the infrastructure, ensuring safe and secure power distribution across the nation. Today, the company employs around 7,000 Armenians and maintains a credit rating higher than the Republic of Armenia itself, representing a remarkable turnaround that has strengthened Armenia’s energy security.
In recognition of his charitable works, Karapetyan received the Order of Saint Gregory the Illuminator in 2013. His family’s extraordinary $30 million donation to renovate Etchmiadzin Cathedral—the most sacred site of the Armenian Church—and construct a concert hall and chapel at the Holy Etchmiadzin monastic complex earned him and his wife the high honors of “Holy Etchmiadzin” and “Daughter of Etchmiadzin” in September 2024.
